Just curious...

Is there a "go to" radio station in Northern Michigan for breaking news or weather emergencies, especially on weekends?

The reason I ask is that Buzzboarder Radio1 posted the following: How LOCAL radio dealt with Whitneys death

On an ancillary note, would a breaking story such as Whitney Houston's death even resonate in Northern Michigan?

WWJ is definitely a "go to" station, even around Bay City/Saginaw for me.

I'm thinking in Northern Michigan, the public radio stations from CMU and Interlochen are fairly reliable breaking news stations, at least on the hour or alternating hours.

No station that I can think of up here. Like Sparky said, WWJ if the conditions are right.

Depends what one means by "breaking news."

For weather emergenices, I would have to believe WTCM AM/FM are at least semi-dependable. Perhaps even 98.5 WUPS falls into that category.

I'm glad you asked... WNMC is the only station with a live staff 20 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year. We often break traffic and other news before anyone, because we answer our phone, and we have internet access. We have over 70 staff (only 1 is paid).

No station (like IPR) has staff around past business hours, and I believe they just VT breaks on the weekends. We also are the first to run live local news weekdays (45 minutes of local and state) daily at 6:30am. We read from the Record Eagle and The Detroit News. IPR only has 4 minutes an hour, and Ron on WTCM doesn't get started until 7am.

When EAS actually goes off after hours, we are on the air in a minute...

Kind of wish we had more than 600 watts :lol

As for both WGRY FM and AM, while they are local stations in my area, they don't really have a local feel to them. I don't think anything on there is "live". Could be a tornado warning and you'd never know about it!

WIND-FM. "When wind breaks, we break in."

No surprise about WGRY.

What's sad is there really is no "go to" station in the Flint market anymore. If a tornado like that in 1953 were to happen today, Flint would be half leveled by the time the EAS went out. If you don't have a scanner in this area, you're SOL.

Maybe Salem will lease you the rights to the call letters.

Nah, half of Crawford county would probably be leveled.

On the northeast side CMU Public Radio is the best for national news and weather, for the best local news, weather and closings tune 99.3 WATZ or 96.7 WRGZ from Alpena. The Alpena station airs local news early morning top of the hour, noon and late afternoon top of the hour.
