Weather reporting
Re: Weather reporting
Warren had sirens going off just after 4.00p…….. we were given the “take cover/shelter” warning at work.
It was scary for a few with sideways rain and green skies ….. but was done about 15 min after it started

Re: Weather reporting
Same thing for a friend that works for GM at the Warren Tech Center. They interrupted their workday to take cover, including having to drop an overseas video conference. As far as he knows, that's way out of the norm for them - virtually nothing gets in the way of work.

Re: Weather reporting
When the severe thunderstorm warning was reissued to add St. Clair county (while retaining much of Macomb County), the "tornado possible" tag was added.
That likely explains why the sirens were sounded.

Re: Weather reporting

Re: Weather reporting
Looks like a strong to intense tornado is carving a path thru St. Joseph and Branch counties in SW Michigan.
A confirmed tornado also has struck portions of Van Buren and Kalamazoo County, including the city of Portage.

Re: Weather reporting
Streaming WOOD TV at the moment. They are doing their usual excellent job.
Word is that Centreville took a direct hit and 4-inch hail was reported around Union City.

Re: Weather reporting
WOOD TV in Grand Rapids has been excellent with storm coverage. I've been streaming them via woodtv.com frequently since about 5:45 this afternoon.
Nasty storm moving thru Livingston County right now. This same cell produced a tornado earlier.
I will say I think the severe weather threat east of 275 is quite low. Some isolated severe reports in the heart of the Metro are possible, but it won't be anything like SW Michigan witnessed.
8:20p update: these cells are losing steam quickly. Wind speeds inside the cells are now generally unimpressive and cloud tops are shallowing.

Weather Spotters are reporting that NOAA radio is not sending warning and watch notifications on time. Wx spotters suggest they are about 10 minutes after nws issues them.

Re: Weather reporting
I can confirm that… the Severe Warning for Livingston county wasn’t mentioned until it did a remains in effect update around 12 minutes after it was issued. It may have done it right away and I missed it but the computer should be repeating it at least once in 12 minutes.
Re: Weather reporting
The tornado was pretty close to where I live but was just a bit north was Texas Township & Portage trees down and Fedex warehouse was damaged was built just 2 years ago. Was hardly any wind or thunder or lighting during the heart of the storm just heavy rain and some hail. Wood TV did a good job like always, Fox17, & WWMT as well didn't watch WZZM coverage.

Re: Weather reporting
WWMT and WZZM both streamed their coverage live in HD on YouTube (I stumbled across that near 7:30 in the evening). That impressed me and makes viewing easy for those of us with a smart TV.
I had to watch WOOD's coverage via their website on my smartphone.

Re: Weather reporting
My educated guesses as to tornado strength based on damage photos I've seen so far:
Portage - EF-2 (I'm going to estimate peak winds of 130 mph)
Centerville - EF-1
North of Colon and south of Union City - EF-3. If the photographed home that was obliterated was well constructed and not a modular home, an EF-4 rating would not surprise me. It appears Union City proper was in the hail core and barely missed getting struck by the tornado; baseball to even softball size hailstones were reported.
There may have been additional twisters in the Decatur, Climax (continuation of the first Portage tornado) and Coldwater areas, but I've not seen photos so far.
Edit at 5:18p:
The Grand Rapids office of the NWS has assigned a rating of EF-2 to Portage's tornado damage. I have not yet found a full damage survey report online, which will speak to max wind speed.

Re: Weather reporting
The primary tornado that carved a path from Centreville to near Union City based on a preliminary assessment had peak winds of 130 MPH, making it an EF-2. This is the twister that spawned a tornado emergency declaration for northern Branch County for a time.
A much weaker, brief secondary tornado was rated EF-1 with 95 MPH peak winds near Union City.
Damage assessment with the primary tornado is continuing, and it is possible it could be upgraded to EF-3 intensity still.
