Does CBS run the Tigers home games with stereo miking, like they did in the Ed B days at WJR?
Can't get WXYT in HD to check down here.

I caught an April game on 97.1 while driving west of Flint and it was in stereo. If WKZO-FM in Kalamazoo could air the games I would have a definitive answer, but thanks to WBCK-FM Battle Creek (mono 24/7), I can't help. (To bring up a valid rant, Cumulus WBCK-FM blocked Midwest's WKZO-FM from airing Tiger games since the signals overlap. WBCK's argument is WKZO's signal is too strong on the west side of BC. My argument is you can flip this discussion regarding WBCK's signal over Kalamazoo. In fact WBCK comes in very listenable here and I am less than 2 miles from WKZO-AM's towers (the FM simulcasts most of the AM)).

Forgive me for asking but why the heck does it matter? Baseball games on the radio are two guys talking plus random crowd noise. The stereo effect adds nothing. OK, so one guy talks through the right speaker and the other guy through the left. Big deal. So what.

Better to keep ballgames on class I AMs than FMs with limited range.

I agree in a way. Ballgames on AM is almost like tradition... father and son listening to Ernie and Paul... BUT when I was in the metro in 2007 and heard the Tigers and Lions on 97.1 in stereo instead of on AM I was sold on the other argument. I see both points.

WKZO-FM and any other station that receives the satellite feed of Tigers games couldn't air a true stereo feed of Tigers games because the games are not uplinked in stereo. The Michigan Radio Network distributes two stereo satellite receivers, but splits the channels. The left channel might be Tigers and the right channel Red Wings. The Michigan Radio Network also uplinks MSU football and basketball, Pistons, and Lions. MRN has four mono channels (two channels per receiver). Wolverines have the capability to be in stereo because they are syndicated by IMG which uses a newer XDS satellite receiver and does not split stereo channels (program a on left, program b on right).

Baseball just sounds better on AM.

ByteMe's explanation seems perfectly valid to me.

WLAV-FM in Grand Rapids broadcasts an FM Stereo signal around the clock, and even though their stereo pilot remains lit during Tigers broadcasts, it is fairly obvious the audio source is monaural. (The overall audio quality is still quite good nonetheless.)
