"The Weather Channel is trying a novel approach to turn around some flagging ratings: It is reemphasizing weather."

Well this is definitely some welcomed news. I like the quote ‘‘Think of it as the ESPN for weather.’’ I am sure TWS has alienated a lot of viewers with the introduction of all those other shows. I think going back to basics is the right choice. Now if MTV would re-focus on music...

So when are these changes taking place!? Looking at the line-up it shows Full Force Nature on from 2pm to 5pm.

Also, I think the new maps are terrible. What they had before was way better!

These changes sound like they amount to little more than putting a ribbon on a turd.

Lowest ratings in five years? SERVES THEM RIGHT!!! Go to hell, NBC Universal!!!

I won't be a regular viewer until they dump Al Roker and put a muzzle on Stephanie Abrams. They also need to bring back some of their veteran on-air folks, some of whom have been behind the scenes for years.

Not a fan of the downsized weather maps or the horrendously low budget looking "Local on the 8s" graphics. I cannot believe how piss poor the Local on the 8s graphics look now!!! It's as if the clock has been rewound to 1993.

On the positive side, I somewhat like the new sidebar (visible on the HD version of TWC only), as well as the update ticker that runs near the bottom of the screen. The snowfall forecast graphics are also much improved.

If I happen to be on TWC, I go for the HD channel as well.

I miss the weather channel of old, I hope it returns to something like that. I still remember the local forecasts being just in a purplish blue screen. At least where I grew up in Monroe co Michigan and also in Hilton Head Island South Carolina.

I remember the crazy music they used to play during the local forcasts of yore(ours was on an orange and blue screen). I was watching my local forecast about a month ago and heard Lady Caca. What a change.

I was trying to give them another chance today but those maps have really taken a step backwards. Reminds me of those black and white radar maps from the early 80's. Simply hideous!

I have to agree with moldyoldie, the ability to get a readable local update any time I tune in is a great improvement.

You're thinking of the old "Weatherstar 3000". That system was used by TWC's cable operators on their end to display the local weather forecasts from it's beginnings to around the early 90's when a new colorful "Weatherstar 4000" came out.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weather_Star_III
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weather_Star_4000

Some stations continued to use WSIII for the rest of the 90's (I remember Bedford Cablevision near me did but Buckeye already upgraded much earlier).

There was one time around 1987 when they had an idea to use video backgrounds to put behind the local forecast text, here's some examples.

Prior to 1992, Canada's "The Weather Network" also used WSIII as well, though I see they chose a different color scheme for theirs.

Here's apparently one of the last recordings of WSIII from almost 9 years ago.

I see one cable outlet in Vermont is still using an older system after TWC's revamped launch a few days ago (this is the Weatherstar XL, which came out in the late 90's)....

They just need to ship them away altogether. Roker is... well, Al Roker. Abrams just gets under my skin big time. Neither of them belong on TWC IMO.

I like how Al Roker hyperventilates as he presents the weather. He is a mediocre broadcaster; never understood how he became so popular.

Not a bad bunch. I think Abernathy was the best out of that group.

Paul Emrich is the chief met at one of the major network affiliates in South Bend, IN.
