Every single one of the 34 allegations of wrongdoing are events that are alleged to have taken place in 2017. Trump had already been elected. So is it fair to assume that the secondary crime was NOT one of advancing his presidential campaign in violation of campaign finance laws? In order to argue advancement of his 2016 presidential campaign, there would have to be an allegation somewhere that Trump did something illegal in 2016 before he was elected. Or are they going to try to tie it to his 2020 re-election campaign?

They could easily tie it to 2020… he declared on January 20th 2017 which was absolutely idiotic. He VOLUNTARILY put himself in that position years earlier than anybody else would have and was immediately subject to campaign finance laws as he raised money and held rallies across the country. I wouldn’t be surprised if his advisors told him not to and his ego ignored their advice.

As much as I enjoy watching anything bad befall such a horrible individual as Donald Trump, I do agree to some degree with what bmw says here and other threads.

What he did in Georgia, on January 6th, and with documents in Mar a Lago are infinitely more criminal and worthy of the country's disgust than this. He cheats on his wife and pays money to try and hide it, for numerous reasons. Despicable, but probably one of tens of thousands who has done so. Trying to subvert an election? Start an insurrection? Steal classified documents? There he is in a select few. I wish those cases were filed first. I do think the reasons this case was filed is in a predominantly way to fill a political agenda, and I fear it might cheapen the other real counts he deserves to be charged with.

But the group that supports him won't change their minds no matter what. He is gonna have his 30% that literally won't care if he spits in their face. And another 10% of the idiots that would vote for him because he has an R next to his name.

Still, the majority of this country is not THAT stupid to ever elect him again, at least I hope and pray.

That quote from the judge about him not getting to respond to every criticism is the exact kind of thing that he will use on appeal. Per another source, "her gag order to preclude attacks on DOJ prosecutors, potential trial witnesses, and court staff" (Slate). Trial witnesses and court staff are one thing, but he's not allowed to criticize the DOJ prosecutors? No way that last one stands up on appeal (or it shouldn't, anyway).

Seems like an odd gag order. The magistrate has decreed he can say this but not that. Can speak to some but not all.
I've always thought a gag order was "Shut your face period". You're right, he will appeal and the barristers get richer.
