Did you ever work with Ken Sands (Spike Jones) at WTRX, Ed? Ken left for Motown, and he mixed that track personally with Marvin Gaye. Each of two takes of the vocal was put in the left and right channel, and the rest of the tracks in the center (in phase equally in the left and right channel), in an early experimental mix by Ken, for Marvin to listen to and decide which he liked better. Marvin decided he liked them both, and so you have the echo, double track, different lyrics, slightly out of sync sound you have heard since. It's one of the Motown "mistakes" that really wasn't. Board poster audiophile has talked to Ken recently on 80 Meters.

I think that is correct. They say something like "Hey man, what's happenin' man" at the beginning. The saxophonist at the beginning, Eli Fontaine, said that he was just warming up, but Marvin said it was perfect and ended the session. Hope he got his full pay for the session. He certainly earned it.

This is tough.

Stone Temple has good stuff. There is so much of Pink Floyd and all of the Beatles that i like (collectively and individually).

I even like Wichita Lineman as performed by Glenn Campbell AND Freedy Johnston.

The orchestration on the original is crazy good.

Oh man, I just bought the live Nirvana CD and listened to "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" AKA In The Pines..

Very Haunting.
That look at the end.. creepy.. but good.
I read somewhere that MTV wanted him (them) to go out and do an encore and Kurt said no, he couldn't ever top that.. smart move

Sorry to get off topic for a sec...

I shared a dorm room with Eli's son Marcus at Northern Michigan University Fall '79-Spring '80. Marcus played bass, very talented guy. He had some albums of his dad when he was playing with The Michael Henderson Band, IIRC. I didn't know he played with Marvin Gaye though, wow!
