I take the 3rd alternative: The Monkees.

Then there's "give me shelter", "mothers little shelter" and a few others. I'll still take the Beatles. Then, the Rutles.

Of the two choices, the Beatles. Neither was especially good.

I disagree, sometimes through all the hoopla the fact that The Beatles were quite talented goes un-noticed.
Plus, what they did for recorded music and the way bands were formed changed popular music completely.

But, I feel the same of The Monkees musical talent, except Jones, he was just the cute one. Dolenz was one of the best male pop singers that ever lived. He had range and texture that many wish they had. Tork was and is beyond a talented musician.. etc..

I agree Lemontin. Hype only goes so far, the Beatles and Stones have lasted because of their talent. New Kids on the Block sold a shitload of music in their day but had no staying power. The Bee Gees too, say what you will, but their music is still very much here and popular, even with younger fans.

Just came across this comprehensive treatise on the debate. For those so inclined, enjoy! :)

I've heard stories about both these groups that make me disgusted. One story was about that Mick Gagger guy mixing the ashes of his dead father in with marijuana and smoking it. Another was about him and this other funny one, David Bowie. Then in The Beatles I read somewhere that one member had relations with a parent. And these are supposed to be role models?

If one is looking for role models, Rock and Roll, Movies and TV are not the places to be looking for them. Never has been and never will be.
