Last January, I attended a book signing by Tim Dorsey, in Largo FL. This is the photo of the event. I'm the one with my hand raised.

I didn't infer any ill intent from his reply. I think the suggestion was that I was raising my hand to ask for a cookie,

Actually, they asked us all to wave at the camera. I waved with my left hand.

Dorsey's next novel, No Sunscreen For The Dead, is being released in January. I'll be at that signing event for sure. In spite of its murderous title, it's actually a satirical, comic novel. Florida's zaniest news headlines, always find their way into the pages of Dorsey's next book.

He once told the group of us, that it's difficult to satirize Florida, because every day life is already so bizarre.

Here is a sneak preview of the prologue from No Sunscreen For The Dead.
CENTRAL FLORIDA
Late one night in the state’s largest retirement community, a
sixty-eight-year-old woman and her younger boyfriend were
arrested for having public sex in the town square.

The police officer found them at ten thirty with underwear
down, still going at it against the side of something called the Bait
Shack.

The press went ape. Media around the country eagerly picked up the story, and
the Daily Mail from London actually flew an undercover reporter
across the ocean, who came back with sordid tales of a thriving
swingers’ scene, a black market in Viagra, and drunk driving in
golf carts.

The community quickly swung into action. A local bar introduced a
new rum drink called “Sex on the Square” for $3.75 that sold briskly
during the early-bird hour. The morning paper published the recipe.

So, I just picked up Dorsey's Tropic of Stupid last week. It has an opening page that just makes one want to keep on reading.
The rain had just stopped when the convenience store clerk asked the customer not to heat up his urine in the microwave.

The customer explained that the urine he was heating wasn't his. Which meant it was Florida
Poor Dorsey died suddenly a few weeks ago. Only 62 years old. He was one of my favourite Florida writers.
