The business needs a place for new people to get excited about radio before the big corporations destroy the business!

It explains why you feel the way you do about anything not big, commercial and with real estate.

Real Radio Power? :rollin That's gone. Has been for over two decades and won't be coming back. The only way it works is with a monopoly. It can not generate the revenue needed to operate at the level you wish it would.

Corporations already have destroyed it. Technology is finishing it off.

But they will serve their communities far better than those big real power radio stations have or will.

I don't care what people have been saying about you here. I could not agree with this statement more. I say the sooner it starts the better, and let the fun begin!

Thank you Steff. I don't pay attention and I don't notice it. They can jerk off all they want too.

GVSU and Cornerstone have no effect on the LPFMs. The LPFMs are programming to an entirely different audience. It's not like the commercial stations with 2 sports, 2 country, 2 rock, and 3 hiphop etc trying to slice the pie.

I don't see where the LPFMs have a bad result for for Cornerstone and GVSU either. For the most part it doesn't appear the LPFMs even know or care about the other stations even though they are serving the same market.. They are too busy keeping "The Beast" fed with local programming. They also know that they are going to have a good time and have a job when they come to the station.

I agree that it is going to be a difficult battle for a new station...always has been and always will be.
I know of many stations that were financed by friends and family(certainly not by the banks). You are correct on the approximate costs, except most of the LPFMs have their own towers on a combined studio/transmitter location. They also don't have several thousand $ power bills to pay each month. For those with a passion, determination and hardwork...go for it!

It's difficult to envision a startup facility. Some 44 years ago, a station that you might describe as a "hobby station" was proposed to the FCC to serve and area that would be laughed at today(eastern Muskegon county[no service]). Because of determination and a change in FCC/FAA regulations, that station is now in the top five in Grand Rapids. The conceivers never in their wildest dreams would have ever envisioned that to happen. It could be small today, but, big someday.

Sounds dumb today, but, when the "biggies" are no longer able to pay the power bills, there may be many LPFM and translator channels available! As you have already eluded to....the biggies are headed that way.

I'll trump your 40+ with an additional 11 years.

This can't happen soon enough! And I SO hope EMF and all the other translator abusers have to shut their sites down too. I really don't need to hear K-Love on six different frequencies.

Wait... there's more!

The FCC should revoke the license of any translator rebroadcasting an HD subchannel. You shitheads love your splattering HD systems so much, then keep your crap there. What? No one is listening to HD??? Ohhh, I'm soooorry. Sucks to be the ones who wasted thousands of dollars "upgrading" to HD tech, huh?

Is that the sound of evil laughter I hear coming from Iniquity, giggling something about P.T. Barnum said something or other? Don't forget to pay your licensing fee! He heee!

Oh, and BTW, your ANALOG channel sounds kinda MUDDY now, since your "upgrade" to HD.

Haaaaaa haaaaaaaaa! :rollin

And imagine this... Once great stations like WDRQ and WJR going DARK because the "biggies" ran themselves into the ground.

Ed, I love the way you just come right and say what's on your mind. :lol

If you don't have a show, you sure should!

On the HD thing, I like the idea of the multiple channels, especially to get AM up on FM and improve the sound, etc, but unfortunately people just aren't embracing it. That, and I don't think the coverage area is that great either. So, I have to admit, it may go the way of Quad Stereo, Beta Max and whatever else just didn't fly.

Yeah, HD is retarded. I think they should just leave everything analog and put these "subchannels" on the internet. Cheaper in the long run, and digital coverage vs analog is a joke... just look what happened to OTA television.

The problem is threefold, really...

1... the public doesn't care about HD.
2... the manufacturers aren't going to build equipment for the public who doesn't care.
3... the five people in the coverage area who MIGHT care, probably can't find an HD radio because of the first two points.

There's still many more problems, but that's good enough for now.

Oh, did you know you can transmit/decode a Quadraphonic source via C-Quam AM Stereo?? I believe it was done on KCJJ.

I did years ago... got out of radio in 1998. Today, I'd be fired or assassinated! Probably assassinated and then fired! I'd give the "biggies" too many "cardiac events" if I was still on the radio. Management would have a stroke within the first hour, just from my music playlist alone. It'd go something like this...

"Bill... this looney just segged Sinatra's "I've got the world on a string" into ZZ Top "Got me under pressure" on the air! He knows way too much and I don't like the way that fella talks! But, if you fire him, you'll just make him mad and he'll hack our STL! We're gonna have to rub him out, see!"

Not LPFM, but I guess translators cause its commercial $$$ radio....Like what Big Rapids has done to expand their listening area mostly at night for 1460 WBRN....they rebroadcast on 107-7 that covers the city and south areas and on 95-1 in Reed City area to the north...

Yes, that is what I consider a valid use of a translator.

103.7 in Muskegon and 100.5 in Hart / Pentwater are excellent examples of LPFM being put to good use.

As far as FM translators for existing AM stations are concerned, I found myself sampling 95.3 FM in the Grand Rapids with increasing frequency whenever I travel over there. Nice to hear intellectual conversation as opposed to repetitious talking points or raging diatribes for a change.
